Sustainable Solution for Water Management

Public Utility; California

OBJECTIVES

A multi-purpose solution for a California Public Utility was developed by Roux to manage (treatment and recharge) high rate blow off from water supply wells, but also to manage stormwater runoff from the facility’s parking areas. The solution incorporated subsurface detention and high rate filtration through a vertical upflow filter, ultimately resulting in recharge of the aquifer with clean water in a water scarce region. The surface of the filter combines bioretention design principals (native plants and compost planting substrate) to both detain and treat stormwater runoff from the facility, while providing an aesthetically pleasing landscaped feature for employees to enjoy.
