• According to the American Coal Ash Association’s Coal Combustion Product Production & Use Survey Report, nearly 130 million tons of coal ash was generated in 2014. This makes coal ash one of the largest types of industrial waste generated in the United States.
• Advocacy groups and residents of Northwest Indiana are fighting to have the Michigan City Coal Plant, owned by NIPSCO, completely remove all coal ash on-site.
• The USEPA has announced a new rule-making process to strengthen wastewater discharge limits for coal-powered plants that generate electricity using steam. This rule will take advantage of opportunities to advance the treatment of industrial pollution.
• On July 1st, 2021, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) issued a Coal Combustion Residual closure permit for Alabama Power’s Barry Plant ash pond.
